Voluntary Board Member (with private business experience)

What’s Solon all about?

Solon is an independent, locally-controlled and community focussed housing association and we are trying to be the best at what we do; to become a 3-star housing association by September 2012.
We provide a range of housing solutions (however primarily general needs) and over 1200 homes. Our mission is to deliver ‘excellent customer service’ which is shaped by our residents and addresses the needs of the diverse communities in which we work.

The Board:

Solon is run by the Board of Management (maximum 15 members), which sets overall strategy, monitors performance, and ensures that the mission is achieved. Between them, Board Members need to have the skills to run a social housing business and we have specialists in each of the key housing areas. Board Members are expected to be committed to Solon’s mission and support our values as a not for profit, equal opportunity, charitable housing association.

Becoming a Board Member

We are currently seeking to recruit a person with private business experience that can bring a commercial edge a Board that is primarily made up of housing professionals. You should have the following skills:

  • Ability to think and operate strategically.
  •  Listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to foster effective relationships and work well in a team.
  • Ability to maintain objectivity.

You should also be willing and able to devote sufficient time to Solon business.  This means attendance at approximately one evening Board meeting every other per month.

We are keen to ensure our Board reflects our resident profile and the local community so we particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups – currently female BME communities.

Location: Bristol City Centre - St Paul Street (across from Cabot Circus)
Compensation: Voluntary post

In exchange, you will gain strategic management experience, receive training and personal development opportunities whilst knowing your input has made a difference to local communities. We do not pay our Board Members. However we do meet reasonable expenses for attending meetings.
